At The Nature School NC, we believe children learn best through purposeful, productive play - especially outdoors. Nature provides endless opportunities to see God’s creation and gives children time for planning, problem-solving, curiosity, creativity, and physical challenge. Time outdoors also strengthens children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. Research shows that time in nature improves overall well-being, and we embrace it as the primary context for learning. As children grow more confident outside, they develop a deeper sense of stewardship, gratitude, and joy in the world God has made.
Our vision is for children of all ages and backgrounds to play and learn outdoors with skilled educators who understand the power of play and child-directed learning while keeping Christ at the center of everything we do. At The Nature School NC, children are encouraged to reach their fullest potential, work collaboratively, problem-solve creatively, enjoy active outdoor play, advocate for nature, and build confidence through hands-on experiences and measured risk-taking. We believe outdoor learning nurtures both character and curiosity, allowing children to develop resilience, responsibility, and a lifelong appreciation for God’s creation.
Our program is child-centered and rooted in whole-child development, drawing inspiration from Reggio Emilia, Charlotte Mason, Montessori, emergent curriculum, and inquiry-based learning. Children’s questions, interests, and discoveries guide meaningful investigations that naturally integrate math, science, literacy, and hands-on exploration. By valuing play and following each child’s lead, we nurture confidence, imagination, curiosity, and life-long learning rooted in joy and purpose.
We cultivate essential life skills such as emotional regulation, cooperation, problem-solving, and communication through group play and shared experiences. Community is at the heart of our work - children, families, and educators come together as partners in learning, stewardship, discipleship, and connection. This collaborative environment helps children feel seen, supported, and encouraged to take initiative and think independently.
Using our private outdoor property, children immerse themselves in forests, fields, creeks, and gardens, developing a deep bond with nature and an understanding of how to care for it. We provide a high-quality environment where all children can safely explore, take appropriate risks, build resilience, and develop a genuine love for God’s creation. Time spent outdoors strengthens spiritual reflection, environmental stewardship, and a growing awareness that learning can happen anywhere - not only within four walls.
